FPD's journalism students receive a real-world introduction into the rapidly-evolving mass communication industry. Two middle school courses are offered: Journalism I, an introductory class, and Journalism II. Both classes produce a four-to-eight page newspaper during the nine-week class, learning the basics of reporting, writing, editing and design along the way.
The high school class produces The Saga, FPD's award-winning student newspaper. The Saga is a member of both the Georgia Scholastic Press Association and the National Scholastic Press Association; the 2006-07 staff earned the Turnaround Award from the GSPA in addition to several individual awards. The Saga is published eight times annually.
Mr. Cal Powell serves as journalism instructor and staff adviser for both The Saga and The Viking View, FPD's middle school newspaper.
A graduate of the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism, Powell is a former award-winning columnist and sports reporter for the Northwest Florida Daily News in Fort Walton Beach.
